Fish Consumption Caveat: Advisories May Not Help with Long-Lived Contaminants
نویسنده
چکیده
Worldwide, people’s diets are their main source of exposure to most persistent organic pollutants (POPs).1,2 Fish is a major contributor to POP intake and also the primary dietary source for methylmercury. A new statistical modeling tool discussed in EHP suggests that fish consumption advisories are unlikely to effectively reduce prenatal exposures to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other POPs with long elimination half-lives. The model, dubbed CoZMoMAN, was developed by a team of computer modeling researchers. CoZMoMAN is actually

Fish Consumption and Advisory Awareness in the Great Lakes Basin
More than 61 million adults live in the eight U.S. states bordering the Great Lakes. Between June 2001 and June 2002, a population-based, random-digit-dial telephone survey of adults residing in Great Lakes (GL) states was conducted to assess consumption of commercial and sport-caught fish and awareness of state-issued consumption advisories for GL fish. On the basis of the weighted survey data...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effectiveness of Fish Consumption Advisories: Modeling Prenatal, Postnatal, and Childhood Exposures to Persistent Organic Pollutants
BACKGROUND Because human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) occurs mainly through ingestion of contaminated food, regulatory bodies issue dietary consumption advisories to describe safe intake levels for food items of concern, particularly fish. OBJECTIVES Our study goal was to estimate the effectiveness of fish consumption advisories in reducing exposure of infants and children...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of State Fish Consumption Advisories Targeting Sensitive Populations
OBJECTIVE Fish consumption advisories are issued to warn the public of possible toxicological threats from consuming certain fish species. Although developing fetuses and children are particularly susceptible to toxicants in fish, fish also contain valuable nutrients. Hence, formulating advice for sensitive populations poses challenges. We conducted a comparative analysis of advisory Web sites ...
متن کاملAre Fish Consumption Advisories for the Great Lakes Adequately Protective from Chemical Mixture?
Background: North American Great Lakes are home to more than 140 types of fish and are famous for recreational and commercial fishing. However, presence of toxic substances has resulted in issuance of fish consumption advisories typically based on the most restrictive contaminant. Objectives: We investigate if these advisories, which typically neglect existence of a mixture of chemicals and the...
متن کاملNeed for Improved Risk Communication of Fish Consumption Advisories to Protect Maternal and Child Health: Influence of Primary Informants
Fish consumption has established benefits, including the promotion of cardiovascular health and pre- and neonatal brain and eye development, but local freshwater fish may be a source of contaminants that are especially harmful to fetuses and young children, such as the neurotoxic and developmentally toxic methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls. Fish consumption advisories may be issued by ...
